The designation
In 2002 the Ticino Valley as a whole (Piedmont and Lombardy) was designated as MAB Biosphere Reserve and became a full member of the Global Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
In September 2017, the Valle del Ticino Reserve submitted a new application in order to extend the MAB area as far as the Swiss border by including the entire area of Lake Maggiore, the lakeside municipalities and the territory belonging to the Val Grande extention, the Reserve took the name Ticino Val Grande Verbano, in order to include the main territorial areas in the new area. In April 2018, the IACBR issued a favourable opinion on the candidature of the "Ticino Val Grande" Biosphere Reserve.
During the 30th session of the Man and the Biosphere Programme International Co-ordinating Council (MAB-ICC), held in Palembang, Indonesia from 23 to 28 July 2018, the new Ticino Val Grande Verbano Biosphere Reserve was officially designated as an extension of the Ticino Valley Reserve.

After the Ticino Val Grande Verbano Reserve was proclaimed, on 8 November 2018, during the 1st National Meeting of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, the certificate of recognition was officially handed over by Jonathan Baker of the UNESCO office in Venice.
Then, on 15 March 2019, an official ceremony was held to deliver the certificates of designation to the Authorities of the Regions, Provinces and Municipalities that have joined the MAB Programme and whose territory is recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The location chosen for the Ceremony was the "Piroscafo Piemonte", belonging to the Navigazione Laghi governmental management fleet, the oldest steamship in Italy still in operation.

La sagoma di un uomo per richiamare lo stretto rapporto che ha l’essere umano con la Biosfera. È questo il brand della Riserva MAB UNESCO “Ticino Val Grande Verbano”.
Il brand è stato ideato grazie ad una convenzione gratuita siglata dalla Riserva con l’EnAIP di Novara, e in collaborazione con l’Associazione Amici del Ticino.
